Well. Things got a little exciting on Monday afternoon as North Korea and South Korea exchanged artillery fire around Yeonpeyong (say that five times fast) Island. There are a lot of different things afoot in North Korea these days but the two items of note are the recent disclosure of a uranium enrichment facility and the ongoing drama surrounding the Kim line of succession. The U.S. upped the ante by sending a carrier force led by the U.S.S. George Washington into the Yellow Sea. The really interesting thing about all of this is the strange silence coming out of China other than the normal "we urge all sides to remain calm" rhetoric. The next few days could get really interesting. Ive mentioned this before, I believe, but one of the questions we need to ask ourselves is do we want to go into a conflict with North Korea to begin with simply because we'll win it and have to deprogram the entire country. That process will make the aftermath of the Iraq War look like a picnic. DW over at Connect the Dots and I have had this conversation before and it never seems to end in a good place for anybody involved.
I'm only about a month behind the times here but we held an election in the United States this month that has certainly changed the power structure in Washington. Whether or not that change will be for the better remains to be seen. I guess the thing that I find interesting is the amazing amount of denial coming from the White House, the Democrats, the media - all the usual suspects really - about the fact that a group of concerned citizens can get together and affect politics in this country in such a dramatic way. The White House and the Democrats say that the reason they lost was they didn't get out their message clearly. Wait...what? I'd say the reason they lost is because the American people understood their message loud and clear.
