Wait....what?

How can this possibly be construed as a good idea? I don't care that they say that the purpose of the vessel is peacekeeping operations. The problem is this:

"Burtsev also confirmed that Russia was planning to purchase one of the Mistral warships and to construct a further four warships under license.

"We plan to buy one Mistral-class ship in France, and with technical support from the French to build four helicopter carriers of this class under license," Burtsev told the news agency."

I guess they're a bit out of practice on being a team player since they were out of NATO for forty odd years.

If Russia wants to buy crappy French hardware, I say more power to 'em. They'll park those ships up there in the north and they'll rot in place, just like all the rest of their northern fleet.

BTW, did you see the TV special about decommissioning a Typhoon-class soviet sub? I think it was on NatGeo Channel. That was fascinating, and kinda sad at the same time. Those were amazingly well-engineered boats.

What France may do to Russia if they can't pay for the ships...
